Projekt Väst startade våren 2017 på initiativ av Gunnar Wohlin, grundskolechef på Stockholms stads utbildningsförvaltning, Birgitta Thulén, avdelningschef för förskolorna i Hässelby-Vällingby och Bengt Nilsson, dåvarande VD för NTA-skolutveckling.
Projektets uppdrag var att skapa en modell som möjliggör för fler elever att bli behöriga att söka till gymnasiet i åk 9. Projektet sträcker sig från förskolan upp till elever som ska börja i åk 7. Grunden är elevernas språkkunskaper och tillgång till redskap för naturvetenskaplig inlärning som utgår från Lära genom att göra.
Efter 3 år kan vi sammanfatta våra erfarenheter i en modell som utgår från Eleven i fokus. Modellen förutsätter en ”röd tråd” som startar i förskolan och visar vägen upp mot högstadiet. Med rätt pedagogiska redskap kan pedagogerna ge eleverna en trygg kunskapsbas att stå stadigt på i fortsatta studier. Genom elevernas lust och vetgirighet främjar pedagogerna till ökade kunskaper.
Det ställer även höga krav på pedagogernas egen kunskap. Det blir därmed viktigt att det finns avsatt tid för fortbildning och kollegialt erfarenhetsutbyte.
För att ge eleverna naturvetenskapliga begrepp och ord krävs god kunskap i det svenska språket. Användandet av flera språk i linje med elevernas olika modersmål stärker kunskapsutvecklingen för individen. Inlärningen främjas av möten med andra i olika miljöer. Det främjar elevernas förståelse för sin omvärld samt synliggör de vetenskapliga begreppen i ytterligare sammanhang.
För att ta tillvara elevernas erfarenheter när de lämnar förskolan och börjar förskoleklass är det viktigt att de mottagande pedagogerna är väl insatta i vad eleverna har mött i förskolan. Ett överlämnandedokument med den informationen ger grundskolan möjlighet att bygga vidare på elevernas erfarenheter inom det naturvetenskapliga området.
